Evaluation of Optical Properties of Progressive Addition Lenses using Camera

Abstract
Purpose: To evaluate distribution of optical aberration occurred in far region, periphery region, center region, and near region of Progressive Addition Lenses (PAL) using camera.

Methods: Using camera photos of PALs were taken. Near region and periphery regions with optical aberration were magnified. With MATLAB computational program, degree of optical aberration and distortion were calculated.

Results: Optical aberrations associated in progressive addition lenses were clearly visible in photographed images and amplified as increasing lens addition. Also, distortion and blurred phase were observed where optical aberration was placed.

Conclusions: The Camera-aid lens imaging technique would be applied for increased satisfaction of the use of PALs to users based on better understanding the fundamentals of PALs and also can be applied as one of simulation technologies in designing PALs.
